GREAT NEWS!

We signed our new Collective Agreement on April 22nd so we are now officially covered by the new agreement.

It has been some months since our General Assembly when we presented the modifications to a number of articles in the collective agreement. The table indicating changes to specific articles is still available on the CUSSU web page at cussu.org. However, the changes are not detailed in the table so we are currently preparing a summary highlighting the changes which will appear in the June issue of the CUSSU newsletter.

A few things to note:

The Collective Agreement will be posted on the HR website in French only. The English version is currently being translated and should be available sometime in the fall.  If you have questions regarding the new collective agreement, please send them by email to the Union Office at This email address is being protected from spambots. One important change that we wish to bring to your attention is under Article 22 – Summer Hours. We believe that the University will announce shortly that the 10-week Summer Hours period will begin on June 13 (that would be the first Friday). The reduction of the workweek is for 10 consecutive weeks.  The University generally posts the summer schedule around the 15 of May. At the same time HR will contact the Union advising them of the summer hours and those essential services that must be maintained in various departments throughout this time.

The major change comes under Article 22.07 with the introduction of banking the summer hours under specific conditions:

a) In the event that an employee is absent, credit will not be given for "banking" of time off for any such days.

b) However, an employee may bank these hours if the employee is on approved vacation during the full week during the 10 week period of summer hours. These banked hours should be used before May 31st of the following year.

There is also a slight modification to Article 22.09 for departments where employees are required to maintain their normal work schedule.

Under Article 22.09 if an employee is unable to take advantage of summer hours as they occur, the unused hours may be "banked" and then taken at the time agreed upon with the immediate supervisor. Such "banked" hours should be used up before the end of August but, in special cases, where this is not possible due to the nature of the departmental workload, the "bank" may be held over. In every case, banked time must be used before May 31st of the following year.

Special General Assembly November 7th, 2013 - Ratification of Agreement in Principle

November 8th, 2013

I am pleased to announce to everyone that the Agreement in Principle for the renewal of our Collective Agreement 2010-15 was approved last night at the Special General Assembly held at the OMNI Hotel.

I wish to thank all those that attended the meeting.

It is our understanding that the University will be able to place all the employees in their new pay scale before the holidays and that retroactivity payments will also be made to employees during one of the December pay days, therefore in this income tax year (2013).

Again thank you all for coming in such large numbers with such a short notice.

In Solidarity,

On behalf of the Negotiation Team, the Executive and Union Council Committees,

Danièle Berthiaume, President
